Parker Solar Probe is humanity's first-ever mission into a part of the Sun's atmosphere called the corona . It'll fly just over 6 million km from the surface - protected from the searing temperatures by a revolutionary new heat shield. But then, the launch of NASA's Mariner 2 spacecraft in 1962 - becoming the first robotic spacecraft to make a successful planetary encounter - proved them wrong.

Originally slated to fly in the small hours of Saturday morning, the Parker Solar Probe blasted off Sunday from Florida's Kennedy Space Center at 03:31 am EDT / 00:31 PT / 8.31 UMT. Nothing from Planet Earth has ever hit that kind of speed. "To me, it's still mind-blowing, " she said. The engineers are taking utmost caution with the $1.5 billion Parker Solar Probe, which Thomas Zurbuchen, head of Nasa's science mission directorate, described as one of the agency's most "strategically important missions". The last time a man-made object came close to the star's surface was in 1976 when Helios 2 achieved perihelion, the point of the orbit at which it was closest to the sun, at 27 million miles.
