United States to host Chinese trade delegation starting April 3

Upon conclusion of last leg of trade talk between United States and China on Washington, Trump had delayed tariff over $200 billion worth of Chinese goods, citing modest progress over the latest round of talk, in particular on Intellectual Property transfer and independence of U.S. firms conducting businesses in China.

Trump, in a television interview aired on Friday, also said he expected to keep a 25 percent tariff on European light trucks amid separate ongoing trade talks with the European Union, but that companies could avoid it by building factories in the United States.

Despite the threat of sustained tariffs, Trump said prospects for a deal were "coming along nicely".

U.S. companies rushed to bring in goods that were about to be subject to Trump's tariffs, driving up imports, while at the same time counter-tariffs by other countries like China and Mexico led to a significant decrease in some major U.S. exports. "I don't think they're the main factor".

Both Beijing and Washington are engaged in intense negotiations in the wake of a trade dispute, which would have originally seen the United States substantively increase tariffs on Chinese goods from March 1.

The EU wants to abolish tariffs in trade with its transatlantic partner, while the USA wants to gain access to the European agricultural market, something that could potentially threaten the farming industry in France and several other countries.

President Trump then moved to the European auto sector, including trucks.

"That's our best segment by far", he said. "This is the kind of economic illiteracy of the president of the United States", Jeffrey Sachs, a professor at Columbia University, told CNBC's Martin Soong on Saturday at the China Development Forum in Beijing. But Chinese President Xi Jinping has reportedly canceled tentative plans to visit Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida next month to sign a final deal, a sign that the talks have stalled.

"The whole trade war is premised on two false ideas: One is that China cheats ... the second idea is that China is a menace", he added.

"I would say tariffs may be a factor in China", Powell said.

"What poses a national security risk is our balance sheet". After a US Senate Finance Committee hearing, he said both sides are "working in good faith" to reach a deal at the earliest possible.
