Minister killed in Somali attack

Officials in Somalia say that al-Shabab has increased its attacks in Mogadishu as retaliation for the air strikes.

A Somali police officer says five people, including the country's deputy labour minister, have been killed in an Islamic extremist attack on a government building in the capital.

Saqar Ibrahim Abdalla, Somalia's deputy minister of labor and social affairs, was killed in his ground-floor office shortly after gunmen stormed the building, he said.

Hussein said two of the al Shabaab fighters who entered the building after an initial suicide auto bomb had been killed in a firefight and that much of the building had been secured.

Al-Shabab has continued to mount regular attacks in Mogadishu since it was forced out of the city in 2011.

Dr. Abdikadir Abdirahman, director of Amin Ambulance Service told Reuters some people were still trapped inside the building and that it was not possible to rescue them because of an ongoing gun battle.

"Al-Shabab stormed the building where two ministries, including the Ministry of Labour, work".

The attack began with twin bombings of the complex housing Somalia's ministries of works and labour, which were then stormed by the Shabaab.

African Union peacekeepers stationed in Mogadishu and elsewhere in the country have helped Somali forces to keep al-Shabab fighters at bay. Saturday is a working day in Somalia.

Police official Ibrahim Mohamed said the attack ended after police killed four gunmen.

An explosion has been heard in the Somali capital, scene of frequent attacks by Islamic extremist fighters. It frequently carries out suicide bombings targeting public places, hotels and government offices despite being pushed out of Mogadishu.

In a separate assault on Saturday, Abu Musab said al Shabaab had exploded a roadside bomb at a security checkpoint in Mogadishu that killed three government soldiers and also injured a local lawmaker and three of his bodyguards.

The Somali government has not immediately commented on the attack.

Al-Shabab, Africa's most active Islamic extremist group, has been fighting for years to take power and create an Islamic state in Somalia.
