Trump says Europe is 'being ripped apart' by Brexit

Vice President Mike Pence hosted Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar and his same-sex partner at the Naval Observatory for the Friends of Ireland breakfast on Thursday.

"The president, who described Brexit as a" attractive, lovely thing" during a visit to Scotland in June 2016, said the UK's divorce from the European Union is "tearing apart" Britain and other member states which he believes is "a shame".

"People often ask me what I felt on Inauguration Day when I raised my right hand", Pence said.

"As you can imagine, with everything else going on at the moment, I've barely had time to think about that", Varadkar said, a reference to votes on Britain's exit from the European Union earlier that day.

The US president also said he did not think another vote on Brexit would be possible because it would be unfair, and reiterated that he would like to see a US trade deal with the United Kingdom after it leaves the EU.

Varadkar met the President at the White House as part of the of St Patrick's Day celebrations in Washington DC.

But he insisted: "We are going to have a very strong border very soon", and he praised law enforcement officers catching "thousands of illegal aliens a month".

The Taoiseach referred to Mr Trump's "Make America Great Again" slogan and said that while the United States had military might and a booming economy, they shouldn't lose sight of what makes America great already - its people and its values.

Rural Cops Brought Down Christchurch Massacre Accused: New Zealand PM
It is the worst attack of its kind in the country's history and was dubbed its "darkest day" by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern . Condemning the terror strike, Ardern had described it as a "terror attack" and said it "appears to have been well planned".

But the tensions over Brexit served this year to highlight a divide between the two countries with Ireland embracing the E.U.as Trump questions why European nations continue to marry their economies together instead of going it alone on issues like trade.

"We shouldn't have a hard border or anything to obstruct the peace process. But I think it could've been negotiated in a different manner, frankly", he said.

At the Capitol Hill lunch hosted by Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, Mr Varadkar avoided remarks similar to his infamous windfarm gaffe past year.

Afterwards Mr Varadkar said he had a "really good meeting" with President Trump.

Speaking about the contributions of Irish-Americans, Pelosi quoted Republican President Ronald Reagan as saying USA leadership would be lost "if we ever close the door to new Americans".

The prime minister had previously revealed Mr Trump told her to "sue the EU" and "not go into negotiations".

Pence called Varadkar's remarks at Thursday's breakfast "inspiring words".
