Officials in New Zealand have not yet released the names of those killed or wounded, but Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said on Friday that many of those "directly affected by this shooting may be migrants to New Zealand" or even refugees.

He was arrested 36 minutes after the first call to police, Ardern added. Thirty-six people were still being treated on Saturday, 11 of whom remained in intensive care.

His 21-year-old son Talha also was killed at the Al Noor mosque.

He added that it was a sensitive process and that he was "aware of the cultural and religious needs". Authorities were working to find out how he had obtained the weapons and a license, and how he was able to enter the country to carry out the attack, she said. "We expect a small number of these people to be well enough to transfer to other wards later today", said Meates.

Ashraf Ali, an imam from Fiji, is also feared to be among the dead, along with 37-year old Osama Adnan.

Tarrant is scheduled to appear in court again on April 5.

"We appear to primarily be dealing with one primary perpetrator, but we want to make sure that we don't take anything for granted in ensuring New Zealanders' safety", Prime Minister Ardern said.

Tarrant was also purportedly inspired to commit the mosque shootings by Norwegian far-right terrorist Anders Breivik, who killed 77 people in Oslo in 2011.

Another man, Naeem Rashid from Pakistan, was seen on the gunman's video confronting the shooter before he was killed, the BBC reported.

His brother Khursheed Alam in the northern Pakistani city of Abbottabad, told the BBC's Secunder Kermani he was proud of his actions.

Greg Robertson, head of surgery at Christchurch Hospital said staff were used to gunshots and other severe injuries, but the scale and nature of the attacks was different.

"I convey the message of love and support on behalf of New Zealand to all of you", she said.

Nebraska floods leave towns submerged and at least one dead
In Wisconsin, Governor Tony Evers said flooding was impacting "homes, businesses, and cities and towns" across the state. The storm also spawned at least three tornadoes in MI and in on Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

"We know that there's been young Somalis that have lost their life, people of Turkish backgrounds that have been injured", he told NPR's Weekend Edition from the airport, on his way to Christchurch.

"It's our pride now, but still the loss - it's like cutting your limb off really".

Bishop of Polynesia - The Most Reverend Fereimi Cama said the Anglican Diocese of Polynesia unequivocally condemned this act of terrorism.

She said the attack had not happened because their country was a safe harbour for hate, or racism or extremism.

One man has been charged with murder.

"The hero tried to chase and he couldn't find the trigger in the gun... he ran behind him but there were people waiting for him in the vehicle and he fled".

The gunman then drove off and was arrested moments later.

Tarrant did not have a criminal history and was not on any watchlists in New Zealand or Australia.

The bodies of victims in the attack believed to be instigated by a suspected white supremacist on March 15 have not been released to families yet since investigations are still ongoing.

The parliament would also pay tribute to the victims on Tuesday.

He had obtained a gun licence in November 2017 that allowed him to buy the weapons used in the attack.

New Zealand Police Commissioner Mike Bush confirmed the suspect was involved in both shootings but stopped short of saying he was the sole gunman. "He was a self-made man", Pathan said.
