The death toll in the New Zealand mosque shootings rose to 50 on Sunday after police found another victim at one of the mosques, and Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said bodies of those killed would begin to be released to families for burial. Police have warned the public that sharing the video is an offence and social media companies have said they are trying to scrub it from their platforms.

Police say they will continue guarding mosques around the country until further notice. Christchurch Hospital on Saturday said most of the victims were men aged between 30 and 60, but children and women were also involved.

Former NSW personal trainer Tarrant did not apply for bail when he appeared in court on Saturday and was remanded in custody without plea until April 5.

She said neither the gunmen nor the suspected accomplices were on any terrorist watchlist in New Zealand or Australia.

Ardern, however, stopped short of suggesting New Zealand could implement a similar policy in the wake of the attacks in Christchurch. He said his mother, who was at the Linwood mosque with his father and brother, saw two people shot.

However, because none of the bodies have been returned to the victims' families because of the investigation, many having been unable to bury their dead within the 24 hours customary in Islam. The offender was in possession of a gun license.

"I was one of more than 30 recipients of the manifesto that was mailed out nine minutes before the attack took place", Ms Ardern told reporters on Sunday.

Leaders around the world expressed sorrow and disgust at the attacks, with some deploring the demonisation of Muslims.

US President Donald Trump, who condemned the attack as a "horrible massacre", was praised by the accused gunman in a manifesto posted online as "a symbol of renewed white identity and common purpose".

Ardern said she had spoken with Trump, who asked how he could help. They have not heard from him since.

"Fijian hearts are breaking for our brothers and sisters in New Zealand - a place where an atrocity of this nature is shocking nearly beyond comprehension".

Daoud Nabi had lived in New Zealand for more than 40 years after fleeing Afghanistan as a refugee in the late 1970s, and believed his adopted home to be a "slice of paradise", his son Omar told AFP.
