Yemen's rebels welcome U.S. vote against the war

Chris Murphy a win Wednesday when it approved a resolution seeking to end USA support for the Saudi Arabia-led coalition in the war in Yemen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., one of the bill's sponsors said in a statement ahead of the vote.

Supporters of the War Powers Resolution argued the United States shouldn't be involved in the war without explicit permission from Congress. Opponents argued the u.s. does not have "boots on the ground" and is offering noncombat technical assistance to Saudi Arabia, an ally.

"The United States Congress is going to reassert its constitutional responsibility over issues of war that have been abdicated for presidents, Democrats and Republicans, for too many years", Sanders said.

Seven Republicans crossed over to support the measure, S.J.Res. 7 As Amended, including Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Steve Daines of Montana. The resolution requires the president to withdraw any U-S troops in or affecting Yemen within 30 days. A handful of Republicans back then offered their support for the measure-or at least wouldn't block it from moving to a floor vote-because of their disgust with MbS and with the Trump administration for defending the Saudis and refusing to enact meaningful consequences for Khashoggi's murder.

McConnell argued the Yemen resolution "will not enhance America's diplomatic leverage" and will make it more hard for the U.S.to help end the conflict in Yemen and minimize civilian casualties.

Democratic Senator Chris Murphy of CT hailed the outcome.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., also voted for the resolution.

However, the White House has signaled the president's intention to veto the resolution. "The Saudi-led war in Yemen has caused 85,000 children to starve to death". Some Senate Republicans this week plan to vote again Trump's emergency declaration, congressional Republicans backed Trump off a withdrawal of US troops from Syria last month, and the House passed a resolution in January to bar a usa exit from North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. Next, it will move to the Democratic-controlled House, where it is expected to pass.

"This is historic. For the first time in 45 years, Congress is one step closer to withdrawing USA forces from an unauthorized war", Sen.

Approaching its fifth year, the war in Yemen has killed thousands and left thousands more on the brink of starvation, creating what the United Nations called the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

In addition to arms, USA military experts have acted as advisers to the Saudi and Emirati command centers in Riyadh and elsewhere, and a US pullout could also impact intelligence gathering.

Largely overlooked throughout this whole process is that these votes show how USA foreign policy, so often a byproduct of Washington lobbyists and other powerful special interests, can be democratized.
