Rockets Fired from Gaza at Tel Aviv, Explosions Heard

The Israeli military said "it appears" that two rockets were launched from Gaza.

Israeli Finance Minister Moshe Kahalon said on Twitter that Israel "would respond as necessary" to the rocket attack. One was reported to have been intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system while another one is said to have fallen in open territory.

The rocket fire raised speculation in Israel that Palestinian militants opposed to any deal between Hamas and Israel were behind the launchings.

Initial reports had indicated that the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) terror group was responsible for the rocket fire.

US President Donald Trump's special envoy to the Israeli-Palestinian peace process Jason Greenblatt on Thursday strongly condemned the rocket fire on the Tel Aviv area, and stressed the administration's "strong support" for Israel.

The rocket attacks came as Hamas and Egypt were discussing a long-term truce with Israel for the Gaza Strip.

As the Israeli Air Force strikes their first targets in Gaza following Thursday night's rocket attack on Tel Aviv, a red alert was heard in the Eshkol Regional Council. "It is responsible for what happens within the Strip and what emanates from it".

TV footage showed what looked like Israeli interceptor missiles streaking into the sky above Tel Aviv, Israel's commercial capital, and detonating.

"Hamas has been shooting rockets at the southern part of Israel for roughly a year now and now they shot two rockets at the Tel Aviv area".

While no group claimed responsibility for the attack, Israeli Education Minister and member of security cabinet Naftali Bennett told RT he believes Hamas bears responsibility for the incident anyway.

IDF Home Front Command said in a statement on Galei Tzahal Army Radio Thursday night that "for the time being, residents should maintain their daily routine as usual". Netanyahu's main rival in the April 9 elections, Benny Gantz, was head of the IDF at the time.
