"We have nominated Greta because the climate threat may be one of the most important causes of war and conflict", parliamentary representative Freddy Andre Oevstegaard told Norwegian media outlet VG.

Greta Thunberg, in August a year ago, became the face of a "school strike" outside the Swedish parliament building.

Ms Thunberg tweeted she was "honoured" to receive the nomination. "Greta Thunberg has launched a mass movement which I see as a major contribution to peace".

According to the Nobel Prize organization, any national member of government can nominate an individual for the heralded peace award.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee doesn't publicly comment on nominations, which for 2019 had to be submitted by February 1.

The Nobel Peace Prize previous year went to Congo's Denis Mukwege and Iraq's Nadia Murad for "their efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict".
