Firebomb Hurled at Israeli Police on Temple Mount, Sparking Riots and Shutdown

Dozens of Palestinians gathered at Bab al-Asbat, one of the main gates to Al-Aqsa compound, the third holiest site in Islam, and held one of the five daily prayers there as Israeli police stood watching while keeping the gates to the Muslim holy compound closed.

"People have been holding prayers since noon today outside the gates to the Mosque compound after police had attacked worshipers inside it, and pushed them out before closing its gates and preventing freedom of worship inside it, alleging that people had set fire to a police station inside the compound", the WAFA news agency wrote.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas responded that there would be "grave repercussions" for what he called a "dangerous Israeli escalation" of violence.

More than 10 people were arrested, police said, including two minors allegedly linked to the firebomb attack who will be brought to a court for a remand hearing on Wednesday, March 13.

Saif said incidents in Jerusalem was as a result of silence of the worldwide community before the violation of all global agreements and human rights.

"Restraint must be show to avoid inflaming an already tense situation", UN Middle East envoy Nikolay Mladenov tweeted, expressing concern over the escalating situation.

Meanwhile Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu called on "the whole world to react to Israel's brazen attacks on our scared land".

Tensions at the Al-Aqsa compound have been rising for days over Israeli military infractions on the sensitive holy site.

"We can not accept such reckless attacks on holy sites and the whole world needs to react against it", the Turkish state-run Anadolu Agency quoted Cavusoglu as saying.

In recent weeks Bab al-Rahmeh and Bab al-Tawbeh have been used by Palestinian Muslims as areas to pray, with prayer carpets laid on the ground.

According to Israel's agreement with the Waqf, Jews may visit the holy site but are barred from praying.

Residents said police were also restricting Palestinian access to Jerusalem's Old City, where the site is located.

Officials in Jordan, which is the custodian of Muslim holy sites in Jerusalem, have confirmed they are in negotiations with Israel to resolve the dispute.

Haaretz reports that Israeli officials are working with Jordan to calm tensions.

The area inside the Gate of Mercy was sealed off by Israeli authorities in 2003, and it has been kept closed to stop illegal construction work there by the Jerusalem Islamic Waqf.
