Elizabeth Warren seeks to break up Google, Facebook and Amazon

"And I want to make sure that the next generation of great American tech companies can flourish", she continued.

The result, Warren highlighted, is stifled competition in the tech industry and increased privacy risks to users.

We contacted Amazon, Google, and Facebook about Warren's plan.

Warren specifically said she would seek to unwind Amazon's acquisition of the Whole Foods grocery chain and shoe retailer Zappos, Facebook's WhatsApp and Instagram, and Google's integration of the ad tech firm DoubleClick, internet of things maker Nest and mobile navigation application Waze.

It remains to be seen whether Warren will introduce legislation in the current Congress aligning with the first element of her plan.

Warren was set to speak about the policy to supporters Friday in Long Island City, which would've been home to one of Amazon's headquarters in NY but the tech-conglomerate pulled out of the deal after critics said the city gave them unfair government incentives.

Zion Williamson sets internet ablaze with possible Nike jab
Williamson, a national player of the year candidate who averages 21.6 points and 8.8 rebounds, has missed Duke's last four games. In his absence, the Blue Devils have struggled to find their identity - especially in the paint.

"To do that, we need to stop this generation of big tech companies from throwing around their political power to shape the rules in their favor and throwing around their economic power to snuff out or buy up every potential competitor", she added. And some of these companies have grown so powerful that they can bully cities and states into showering them with massive taxpayer handouts in exchange for doing business, and can act-in the words of [Facebook CEO] Mark Zuckerberg-"more like a government than a traditional company".

The great divide: In a blog post, Warren, a Democratic senator from MA, said that if she wins office in 2020, she's going to push for legislation that labels companies running online marketplaces with revenue of $25 billion or more as "platform utilities". Google couldn't smother competitors by demoting their products on Google Search.

Carl Szabo, its vice-president and general counsel, told Reuters: "Warren is wrong in her assertion that tech markets lack competition". It's just that reversing mergers and acquisitions that were approved in the past sounds awfully illegal.

Take note: Warren's proposal, published as a blog post on Medium, starts with a discussion of another Seattle-area tech giant: Microsoft.

"The federal government sued Microsoft for violating anti-monopoly laws and eventually reached a settlement", she writes. You'll still be able to go on Amazon and find 30 different coffee machines that you can get delivered to your house in two days. The companies have used their resources and Internet dominance "to squash small businesses and innovation, and substitute their own financial interests for the broader interests of the American people", Warren also wrote. Facebook would face real pressure from Instagram and WhatsApp to improve the user experience and protect our privacy.
