Tesla's New V3 Superchargers Add Up to 1600 km Per Hour

While much of the enabling technology for this comes from the new cable design and a 1 megawatt Supercharger power cabinet, Tesla is updating the Model 3 as well to optimize itself pre-charge. It will be initially available only to Model 3 owners, with Tesla planning software upgrades for the Model S and Model X in order to increase their charging rates as well.

The new V3 stations will charge up vehicles at 250 kW of power, making Tesla's vehicles the fastest charging vehicles in the world!

The new generation of Superchargers is based on a completely new architecture, featuring a 1MW power cabinet that supports peak rates of up to 250kW per vehicle.

Tesla says the V3 stations will give full charging power to any owner, without splitting power with the next vehicle also at the station at the same time - and as a result, a typical charge time can drop to around 15 minutes.

The first videos of Tesla's next-generation Supercharger V3 have been shared online, providing an initial glimpse at how the next-generation charging solution works, and the benefits it carries.

Average time charging

In more practical terms, Tesla says this will add up to 75 miles of range in just 5 minutes, more than enough for an average day's commuting in less time than it would take you to run in and use the restroom.

In the coming weeks, over 12,000 existing V2 Superchargers will get 145kW charge rates, up from 120kW.

Tesla plans to expand beyond the first beta charger next month, when it will break ground on the first public V3 Supercharger. At launch, only Model 3 owners will be able to use V3 Supercharging. The feature preconditions the battery for charging when the vehicle recognizes that it is navigating to a Supercharging station. This is most likely to protect your battery, according to @tesla_raj, who stopped by Tesla's unveiling event tonight in Fremont, California.

Tesla further explains, "to operate Summon with key fob, Require Continuous Press must be set to NO under controls Autopilot Customize Summon".
