Snyder County Walmart Greeter Offered New Position

Unlike greeters, customer hosts "must be able to lift 25 pounds, clean up spills, collect carts and stand for long periods of time, among other things - tasks that can be impossible for people with disabilities, "NPR reported on Monday, citing Walmart documents and interviews with workers".

The greeter position, often filled by the elderly and disabled, is being changed to fulfill the new role of customer host.

For years, Walmart has championed its inclusive hiring policies, and its ideal score of 100 on the Disability Equality Index, a rating system measuring the inclusion practices.

At least two Walmart store greeters with cerebral palsy have accepted new roles at the retailer after an outcry over how Walmart was handling the pending phase-out of the greeter job.

Wasser said a corporate Walmart official at its Arkansas headquarters told her similar job offers are being made to other disabled greeters nationwide, who've been affected by redefined responsibilities for greeters. "This allows these associates to continue their employment at the store as valued members of the team while we seek an acceptable, customized solution for all of those involved", the company said in a statement. They pointed to the fact that disabled greeters have been affected by these job changes for years, yet Walmart is only publicly addressing the repercussions now.

"His Walmart family has been a huge part of his world", Holly Caltin wrote about her son, who will lose his job in April. According to his daughter, Laura Murphy, Spencer has a college degree, but being 90 percent deaf has made finding a job hard, until he found his position at Walmart.

In stores where greeters were being replaced by hosts, greeters could apply for the role or another job at the store.

Greeters at the entrance of stores have been a staple of Walmart since the early 1980s, when founder Sam Walton created the job based on a Louisiana store worker's suggestion.

Combs, who has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair, was told he could continue as a greeter at the self-checkout area instead of the front door at the Walmart Supercenter on Southeast 192nd Avenue, said his sister Rachel Wasser of Vancouver.

Jay Melton of Marion, North Carolina, has worked as a greeter for nearly 17 years.

"I'm on cloud nine because I didn't want to leave here so I'm really happy", Adam said.

But Greg Foran, president and chief executive of the company's USA stores, said greeters with disabilities would get an extended window until a solution was found.

Walmart said it expects 95 percent of employees impacted by the change to find new jobs with the company.

Davison, who was beloved for singing to veterans at the Chardon Walmart store, said he was sacked last month after missing work for two days due to health reasons.

Walmart is one of the largest private employers.

People like David Quillen says he'll continue to shop at Walmart but he's extremely disappointed. Addressing Walmart, Ms. Melton added: "When you cut a huge population of people out, and you have written a policy that declares they are no longer capable of doing what they have been doing, that is discrimination".
