Newborn baby with umbilical cord still attached found lying in freezing road

Officials said the newspaper carrier took the baby inside his vehicle and called 911.

One eyewitness reportedly saw the mother and told police she appeared so desperate to get rid of her baby girl that she was driving around Madera Ranchos, California early Monday morning asking people to take the newborn.

A newspaper delivery man in California found a newborn baby girl in the middle of a roadway on Monday while he was delivering copies of the Fresno Bee just outside the city.

Fuentes described the "awful, chilling, moment" he was approaching a customer's house in his auto and saw something white moving in the road, which he initially thought was an animal.

Aurelio Fuentes, who found the infant, said he heard her crying and screaming. "There could've been coyotes, there's cars going by fast down that road", Mr Fuentes said.

Jody Wilson-Raybould resigns from Trudeau's cabinet
Last week, Trudeau told reporters that the allegations in the Globe and Mail's story are false. Mr Trudeau has denied the Globe and Mail report , which cited unnamed sources.

The female infant was reported to be in good condition Tuesday and was being treated by the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Valley Children's Hospital.

Authorities are seeking the mother. "This female got out of her auto, asked the man if he could help her and asked him to take her child", Madera County Undersheriff Tyson Pogue told reporters Monday.

Officers arrived minutes later to find the baby.

A witness said he had encountered a woman with a baby just minutes before the infant was found who had begged him to take the child, United States outlet ABC News reported. She is described as a Hispanic woman in her early 20s who left the scene in a small, white SUV. Upon release from the hospital, she will be placed in the custody of Madera County Social Services.

The state of California has a law that allows parents to safely surrender their baby. Ironically, there was a staffed fire station within a mile or two, and Valley Children's Hospital is very nearby.
