El Chapo trial: Mexican drug lord GUILTY and will NEVER be released

Known as one of the most notorious and infamous drug traffickers in modern history, Guzman managed to evade authorities and broke out of Mexican prisons twice.

The 61-year-old was found guilty today by a NY court of operating the huge criminal enterprise and is expected to be given life in prison.

Federal prosecutors say Guzman's Sinaloa cartel amassed billions of dollars importing tons of cocaine, heroin and marijuana into the U.S.

Guzman was convicted of smuggling over 200 tons of cocaine to the United States over a 25 year period, earning billions of dollars in profits for his cartel, then the world's largest, and now faces a life sentence.

One of the major figures in drug wars that have roiled Mexico since 2006, Guzman became an nearly legendary criminal figure.

Reporters said that El Chapo and his wife, Emma Colonel, didn't show any emotions while the jury read the verdict but afterward, Chapo looked at her and waved. When the jury was discharged, he leaned back in his chair to catch the eye of his wife, Emma Coronel Aispuro, who gave him a subtle thumbs-up.

El Chapo's defense case lasted just half an hour. Defense attorney Jeffrey Lichtman said these witnesses had "lied every day of their lives - their miserable, selfish lives".

U.S. Attorney Richard Donoghue says the conviction of Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman is "a day of reckoning", and there's more to come.

The trial also featured extensive testimony about corruption in Mexico, most of it involving bribes to law enforcement, military and local government officials so the cartel could carry out its day-to-day drug shipping operations undisturbed.

But his voice still filled the courtroom from recordings of intercepted phone calls.

One of the trial's most memorable pieces of evidence came from El Chapo's mistress Lucero Guadalupe Sanchez Lopez, who testified she was in bed in a safe house with an on-the-run Guzman in 2014 when Mexican marines started breaking down his door.

Asked what he was wearing, she replied: "He was naked. He left us behind". He then got an escort from crooked police officers into Mexico City before retreating to one of his many mountainside hideaways.

Recaptured drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman is escorted by soldiers at the hangar belonging to the office of the Attorney General in Mexico City, Mexico, on January 8, 2016. Imprisoned in Mexico in 1993, he escaped in 2001 hidden in a laundry cart and spent the following years moving from one hideout to another in the mountains of Sinaloa, guarded by a private army.

"Why? Because he is guilty and he never wanted to be in a position where he would have to answer for his crimes", she told the jury.
