Pelosi, Top Democrats Condemn ‘Anti-Semitic’ Comments From Rep. Ilhan Omar

She later named AIPAC as the organization paying American politicians to be pro-Israel. "She might as well call us hooked-nosed".

The statement comes just as two Jewish House Democrats, Rep. Elaine Luria (VA) and Josh Gottheimer (NJ), sent leadership a letter urging the caucus to condemn anti-Semitism, after a fellow freshman Democrat came under fire for a tweet that's been criticized as anti-Semitic.

The tweet she reportedly reposted was from Joshua Zeitz, a historian.

In a statement Sunday, New York Representative Max Rose called Omar's remarks "deeply hurtful" to the Jewish people, including himself.

The controversy kicked off when Omar shared, and responded to, a tweet by journalist Glenn Greenwald about Republican Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) threatening punishment against her and Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) for their support for the Boycott Divestment & Sanctions (BDS) movement.

In response, Omar tweeted "AIPAC!" referring to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, which regularly has been accused by progressives of agitating for a conflict with Iran.

The two clubs also meet in the Carabao Cup final in two weeks' time and Guardiola sees little difference between the games. Liverpool were three points ahead of City before Guardiola's side defeated Everton 2-0 earlier this week.

Omar's unusually outspoken criticism of the pro-Israel lobby has rattled some of her Democratic colleagues.

Dan Shapiro, who served as the USA ambassador to Israel during most of President Barack Obama's presidency (2011-2017), sent out a lengthy tweet thread Monday morning condemning Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) for anti-Semitic tweets the freshmen congresswoman sent out Sunday night.

Neither Omar's office in Minnesota nor in Washington immediately responded for comment to Newsweek when asked about the tweet, which appears to invoke an old anti-Semitic stereotype portraying Jews as rich, and using their wealth to orchestrate political affairs. "This has always been the basis of the U.S. -Israel relationship, and it's the reason why members on both sides have been strong supporters of that relationship".

However, Omar has defended her views on Israel, saying she finds it "exciting" that her views are sparking debate.

The spat spurred a conversation about the political influence of AIPAC, which spends millions lobbying on legislation each year. I know Congresswoman Omar.

Chelsea Clinton, daughter of former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, tweeted: "We should expect all elected officials, regardless of party, and all public figures to not traffic in anti-Semitism". "And I believe we can do that without criticizing people for their faith". "Obviously it's a problem that she wants to address", Kildee added.
