You could be banned from Spotify if you use ad blockers

In an email to users, the company said that "all types of ad blockers, bots and fraudulent streaming activities are not permitted".

The latest update to Spotify's Terms of Service includes a serious warning for free users who turned to gimmicks like ad blockers to listen to music online.

The disabling of Spotify accounts on the usage of ad blockers is not applicable to the premium Spotify accounts and only for the free users as Spotify doesn't display ads for the paid users. The free version of the service is ad-supported, meaning users occasionally hear an advertisement or are prompted to watch a video.

"Spotify respects intellectual property rights and expects you to do the same", it said.

The new guidelines specify that "circumventing or blocking advertisements in the Spotify Service, or creating and distributing tools designed to block advertisements in the Spotify Service" may now result in "immediate termination or suspension of your Spotify account".

Ad-blockers may clear up websites full of spam but when it comes to legitimate services like Spotify they're hurting artists and industries. The new TOS goes into effect on March 1st. Rather, cheating free users who get caught will simply immediately lose their account with no way to get it back.

Reuters reported in March, ahead of the company going public, that roughly 2 million users on its platform were blocking ads, effectively pirating one of the most compelling reasons to cough up the $15 a month for a Premium account.

Spotify is looking to expand as well with its recent acquisitions of Anchor and Gimlet Media as part of its effort to build its own podcasting network.
