Rep. Gabbard Won't Call Syria's Assad a US Adversary

Tulsi Gabbard, the first Hindu in US Congress, officially launched her White House bid with an anti-war message, denouncing US interventions overseas and slamming "powerful politicians" in both parties for seeking new wars to wage.

Politico noted Gabbard had met in 2017 with the Syrian leader.

Gabbard, a former Hawaii National Guard member, announced her intention to seek the presidency on February 2 during a rally on Oahu, Hawaii.

"Join me in putting this spirit of service above self in the forefront and stand up against greed and corruption", Gabbard said.

Early polling shows the declared candidates all trailing behind the two heavyweights who have yet to announce whether they are running: former Vice President Joe Biden and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, who ran Hillary Clinton close for the 2016 nomination.

In response, Gabbard accused NBC of using "journalistic fraud" in a smear campaign against her.

She made waves recently for saying in a tweet that President Trump is "Saudi Arabia's bitch" for announcing the US will stand with Saudi Arabia, regardless of any intelligence community assessment on Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's involvement in the killing of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi. If the simple understanding is that the Russian government, which worked to elect Trump in 2016, would like him to win in 2020, Russia will likely seize on any candidate that can help put a wrench in the primary process. She opposes removing Assad from power. During her first 12-month tour, she received the Meritorious Service Medal and during her second tour, she was commissioned as a second lieutenant after graduating from the Accelerated Officer Candidate School at the Alabama Military Academy.

Gabbard, who is not of Indian descent but comes from a Hindu family in Hawaii said the road ahead is not be easy and the battles will be tough. "Today we kick off our campaign", Sputnik quoted Gabbard as stating.

Gabbard has consistently opposed USA intervention in Syria, going as far as to secretly meet with Syria's president, Bashar al-Assad, in January 2017, sparking fierce criticism from some in her own party.

"There is one main issue that is central to the rest, and that is the issue of war and peace", she said.

"She's accused the US of pushing a policy of "regime change" wars and in January 2017, she met with Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad in Syria on what she called a 'fact-finding mission'". She encouraged Trump and congressional Republicans to pull US military forces out of Syria. The rest of the Democrats will be accusing each other of deviationism over trivialities.

The Hawaii congresswoman, who has controversial positions on foreign policy, also seemed to embrace the notion NBC is part of a broader effort to undermine her campaign because she has views contrary to the Democratic establishment.
