Frank Robinson, key to Orioles’ 1st World Series title, dies at 83

"As the first African-American manager in Major League history, Frank was a proponent of civil rights causes on and off the field, including policies that paved the way for minorities to have increased access to executive and management positions in baseball".

An outfielder and first baseman, Robinson was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1982 in his first year of eligibility.

In his first season in Baltimore, Robinson showed he still had plenty left in his 30-year-old body as he was named the AL MVP following a 1966 campaign in which he won baseball's Triple Crown. In 1966, he won the Triple Crown, leading the AL with a.316 average, 49 homers, 122 RBIs and 122 runs.

In the six years Robinson spent as an Oriole, the team went to the World Series four times, winning twice in 1966 and 1970. He later became MLB's first black manager with the Indians and eventually guided four franchises in four different decades. Among being both a player and a manager, Robinson worked in the Baltimore Orioles front office and also as vice president of on-field operations for Major League Baseball. He took over the Montreal Expos in 2002 and moved with the team to D.C. for the 2005 season.

Robinson's No. 20 is retired by the Reds, Orioles and Giants.

One of Robinson's final public appearances was at Dodger Stadium on April 15, 2017 to honor Jackie Robinson, the first African-American MLB player. "The entire Indians organization extends its thoughts and prayers to the Robinson family".

"Frank Robinson and I were more than baseball buddies".

Behar has yet to address the recently resurfaced photo at the time of this writing. Behar added that she wore makeup "that was a little bit darker than my skin".

"So honored to not just have known you Frank as a great man, manager, person, and human being, but who I truly called a good friend and someone who I honestly played as hard as I could for, hoping you would respect me back", Schneider wrote on Instagram.

Robinson was born in Beaumont, Texas, but grew up in of Oakland, California, where in his high school he was captain of a state championship basketball team with Bill Russell - who would go on to be the first black manager in the NBA - as his teammate. The fact Frank hit a solo home run in his first at-bat that day as the Indians' player-manager symbolizes his greatness as a Hall of Fame ballplayer.

A paragon of consistency, Robinson's worst seasons were the stuff of dreams for most Major League Baseball players.

"I knew there was going to be an terrible lot of pressure, a lot of expectation and a lot of unhappy people because when things went right, fine, but when things went wrong, it was going to be doubly bad because of me being the first black manager", Robinson said.

After his dismissal from Cleveland, Robinson returned to the Orioles as a coach from 1978-80 and 1985-87.

He was the NL Most Valuable Player in 1961, the same year the Reds won the league pennant.

After breaking into the big leagues in 1956, Robinson would not hang up his baseball cleats until 2006, following his fourth stint as an MLB manager.
