VW revives American beach buggy as electric concept for Geneva auto show

Volkswagen have gone public with some teaser images of the new electric dune buggy.

While a glimpse of the model is only provided, the new dune buggy does not incorporate a fixed roof or doors, and it maintains the signature oversized off-road tires and open sides. It is, as Volkswagen Head Designer Klaus Bischoff calls it, "vibrancy and energy on four wheels".

"A buggy is more than a vehicle". Actually, lots of curious things were taking place back then, but in the auto world, people were yanking the exterior bits off Volkswagen Beetles and replacing them with open-air, barebones bodies.

Volkswagen is in advanced talks with competitors over opening its modular MEB platform for the mass production of electric vehicles to rivals, German paper Tagesspiegel on Wednesday cited the VW brand's strategy chief as saying.

The original beach buggies were based on the Beetle chassis with minimum bodywork and loads of fun.

NITI Aayog is unaware of jobless rate
Though India's economy has been expanding by 7 percent plus annually, uneven growth has meant that new jobs are not keeping pace. The report said that joblessness stood at 7.8 percent in urban areas compared with 5.3 percent in the countryside.

The I.D. Buggy concept shows that the MEB platform can be used to develop models for low-volume niche series in addition to models aimed at the mass market such as the I.D. hatchback, the company said.

While Volkswagen's classic Beetle may be saying farewell, its spirit looms in VW's electric revival of the VW dune buggy, scheduled to make its debut March 5 at the Geneva Motor Show. We're not sure aftermarket body-swapping will become a new fad for electric vehicles, but from a practicality standpoint, it's easy to see how an automaker could easily adapt the platform to accommodate everything from sports cars to SUVs.

VW has not said whether the e-buggy concept will go into production.

In fact, from the '60s to the '80s, Volkswagen says about 250,000 one-offs or low-volume specialty vehicles were produced globally by builders the world over.
