Huawei exec's extradition hearing pushed to March

Huawei exec's extradition hearing pushed to March

The Justice Department unsealed criminal charges Monday against Chinese tech giant Huawei, two of its subsidiaries and a top executive, who are accused of misleading banks about the company's business and violating us sanctions.

The charges came as China and the U.S. headed into scheduled high-level trade talks.

Canada arrested Meng on December 1 as she was changing planes in Vancouver, at the request of the United States, which on Monday brought sweeping charges against Huawei and Meng that paint the company as a national security threat. Though US Commerce Secretary Ross insists that the affair is separate from other ongoing trade disputes, the magnitude of the affair can only be understood by placing it in the context of the trade war. "We strongly urge the U.S.to stop unreasonable suppression of Chinese companies, including Huawei, and treat Chinese enterprises fairly and objectively".

The twin indictments are the latest setback for the company, with its equipment having been barred from domestic networks in the US, Australia and New Zealand amid security fears.

Meng in particular "repeatedly lied" to bankers about the relationships between the companies, especially with Skycom, a Huawei affiliate in Iran, according to the charges.

Prosecutors say Skycom was owned by Huawei through a subsidiary company. Her arrest sparked immediate outrage in China, with Chinese officials denouncing the arrest and Canada's role in it.

Within the indictment, it is alleged an unnamed Huawei "founder" lied to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about its business dealings in Iran.

Huawei added it is "not aware of any wrongdoing by Meng and believes the U.S. courts will ultimately reach the same conclusion".

Meng has been staying at a family residence in Vancouver ever since Ehrcke approved her release on C$10m ($7.5m) bail.

Canada's Department of Justice confirmed in an email that Canadian officials had received a formal extradition request from the United States on January 28 and that Canada now has until March 1 to issue an authority to proceed. "As part of this scheme to defraud, Meng allegedly personally made a presentation in August 2013 to an executive of one of Huawei's major banking partners in which she repeatedly lied about the relationship between Huawei and Skycom", the U.S. department of justice said in a statement on the indictment.

The Department is accusing of Huawei of violating sanctions against Iran. More importantly, they are also about US-China competition over technology.

There is no allegation Huawei was working at the direction of the Chinese government.

Ren, however, has not been charged.

A second case against the telecommunications company accuses Huawei of stealing robotic technology from the USA company T-Mobile. At issue: T-Mobile's proprietary testing robot named Tappy that Huawei allegedly copied.

Despite attempts to distance itself, prosecutors allege that, at the time of the report, Huawei's China branch launched a "bonus programme to reward employees who stole confidential info from competitors".
