Venezuela: Juan Guaido barred from leaving by Supreme Court

The European Union has yet to formally endorse the opposition leader, though German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said Berlin supported new elections in Venezuela.

"At this point, I think it is hard".

"Considering that he [Guaido] is and was, before the start of the events, in constant contact with Washington, there is nothing surprising in that", Peskov said, responding to a journalists' question about how the Kremlin assessed the contact of the Venezuelan opposition leader with the U.S. president.

"Moreover, I am convinced that if we meet in person, it will be a different story. Let's be patient. For now, I think it is very difficult", Maduro added.

Venezuela's self-proclaimed interim president Juan Guaido has been slapped with a travel ban and had his bank accounts frozen. Maduro has responded that Washington attempted to stage a coup d'etat in Venezuela and announced his decision to cut off diplomatic ties with the United States.

Worldwide support: Guaido's move has received backing across the globe.

The Kremlin is not surprised by the reports of a talk held by Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido with US President Donald Trump, Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday.

Venezuelan Attorney General Tarek Saab sought the preliminary investigation of Guaido on the basis that he had helped foreign countries interfere in internal matters. U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton has warned that any harm to Guaido or the National Assembly he presides over would be considered a "grave assault" and be met with a "significant response", without specifying.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo signed off on the order last week for Guaido to control holdings in the Federal Reserve Bank of NY and federally insured banks, the State Department said. Abrams was reportedly criticized for supporting Contras in Nicaragua and the El Salvador military as both were accused of major human rights abuses during military conflicts.

Last Monday, mass protests sparked across Venezuela and lasted for several days.

The US, a dozen Latin American countries and Canada have recognised Guaido as interim president, while China and Russia - Venezuela's two main creditors - have urged non-interference.

The opposition-controlled legislature, meanwhile, named "diplomatic representatives" to a dozen countries that, like the United States, have recognised Mr Guaido as the interim president. Maduro himself called Venezuela "the victim of a US conspiracy", referring to US Vice President Mike Pence promising Guaidó "full American support" the day before he declared himself Venezuela's new leader.

Opening a case against Guaido comes as worldwide pressure mounts against Maduro's government from the United States, which earlier in the day handed control over Venezuela's US bank accounts to Guaido.
