7 dead, 5 critical in Cuban bus crash

The names and nationalities of those killed haven't yet been released.

"Of the 40 passengers, 22 were foreigners from countries like Holland, England, France, Mexico and Canada", said Venceremos.

The bus, which was bound for Havana, crashed on a road between the cities of Baracoa and Guantanamo on Thursday afternoon.

But witnesses told the station that the crash happened after the driver attempted to overtake a vehicle before changing his mind when he saw an approaching lorry.

The victims included two Argentinean women, aged 35, a 59-year-old German woman and a 67-year-old Frenchman, according to a list published by Radio Guantánamo.

Former Leeds United and South Africa striker Phil Masinga dies aged 49
The South African Football Association (Safa) has confirmed that Bafana Bafana legend Phil "Chippa" Masinga has died. The 49-year-old Masinga lost a long battle with cancer at a Johannesburg hospital on Sunday morning.

Radio Guantanamo learned from the driver of the bus that he lost control on the wet and winding road.

The Cubans were two men, aged 32 and 47, and a 34-year-old woman. The report did not specify if foreigners were among those in critical condition.

A spokesperson for the UK's Foreign Office said: 'We are seeking information from the Cuban authorities following a road traffic accident, and are ready to assist any British people who require our help'.

Roads in Cuba are poorly lit, narrow and poorly maintained. This most recent crash is the fourth bus crash there this month.

Past year there were 11,187 accidents, resulting in 750 deaths and 7,999 injuries.
