National Basketball Association to investigate Cavaliers' signing of Patrick McCaw

The NBA is going to investigate former Warrior Patrick McCaw's three-game stint with the Cleveland Cavaliers, according to a report. But this summer, he chose to move on from the team and declined their qualifying offer.

Patrick McCaw entered this past offseason as one of many restricted free agents that figured to have a hard time finding a deal they wanted with so many teams unable to create cap space to bring in new players via free agency.

McCaw spent his first two seasons with the Warriors, but held out after their most recent championship run.

Cleveland's freaky handling of McCaw made us wonder whether they had done him a favor, signing and then waiving him so he could become an unrestricted free agent as he desired. No one is sure exactly why the Cavaliers did this, but there are a few possibilities.

2nd suspect charged in shooting death of Jazmine Barnes
Both men charged are black but a photofit of a suspect released last week showed a white male believed to be in his 30s or 40s. Hopkins said it was to help the family with funeral costs, too, and hospital bills for Jazmine's mother or other family needs.

On December 28, guard Patrick McCaw signed a two-year, $6 million offer sheet with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Cleveland released him one week later. And if they could do that by messing with their nemesis, well that's just an added bonus.

As a restricted free agent, he made a decision to try and leverage the Warriors by declining their 2-year, $5 million offer in search of a more opportunities and more money elsewhere. After sitting out several months of the season, McCaw finally received an offer sheet from the Cavaliers that the Warriors did not match.

In any case, it will be interesting to see what the National Basketball Association decides and if the McCaw saga affects restricted free agency moving forward.
