Anti-BDS measure stalled in US Senate but 'will come back'

Before President Donald Trump was set to speak to the nation Tuesday night as part of his border security push, Senate Democrats mustered the votes to signal they were not interested in other legislating until there's legislation to reopen the federal government.

Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans show a vote on the bipartisan bills the House passed to open the government. It's about avoiding a vote that will demonstrate to Americans that the Democratic Party has largely turned against Israel, and that a heavy percentage of Democrats are now supportive of anti-Semitism so long as that anti-Semitism is couched in anti-Israel terminology.

House Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Nita Lowey says taxpayers rely on the IRS to assist them in filing taxes and financial planning but now "don't have anyone they can turn to" for answers.

Almost all Senate Democrats voted against proceeding debate on the bill, including lawmakers how have previously supported legislation against BDS and in favor of continued security assistance to Israel. Although conservative allies of the president are urging him to declare a national emergency to build his proposed border wall with military funding, he isn't expected to do that in his remarks.

Similar legislation was introduced by Republican Rep. Mo Brooks of Alabama and Florida Rep. Bill Posey that would pay essential federal employees.

"The shutdown is not the reason Senate Democrats don't want to move to Middle East Security Bill". Republicans now hold a 53-47 majority in the Senate and would need Democratic votes to advance the measure over the 60-vote threshold.

To which Senator Marco Rubio tweeted: 'This is a lie.

Hours before Trump's brief meeting with Democrats at the White House, his message to a handful of frustrated Republicans anxious about the blowback from the shutdown was to "hang together" until he can get billions in wall funding.

Victorian man faces court over 'suspicious packages' found at Melbourne, Canberra consulates
The man arrested is due to face a court in Melbourne on Thursday. Some packages were reported to be labelled asbestos. Police did not release the suspect's name.

On Thursday, Trump plans to travel to the border to again press his case for the wall, insisting it's the only way to stop people from attempting to enter the country illegally.

While spokesmen for Sanders and Cardin didn't respond to a request for comment, a Senate Democratic aide, who asked not to be identified, said the BDS provision was irrelevant to the shutdown issue. Dianne Feinstein's office pointed me to a statement on her website that reiterated her "strong support for Israel" and described Rubio's bill as unconstitutional. All Democrats voted for the legislation.

Rubio, along with Senator James Risch (R-Idaho), last week reintroduced pro-Israel legislation that did not get passed in the last Congress.

Democrats are also working to sway some moderate and skeptical Republicans to abandon Trump on the wall.

Lawmakers believe the pressure will begin to mount on them as the days go on. But Trump has said he will not sign the measure, and McConnell has repeatedly said the Senate won't advance legislation the president won't support.

Meanwhile, Tlaib's Democratic colleagues have taken a more nuanced posture.

"A lot of them agree with what I'm doing", he said.
