US negotiators in Beijing for trade war talks

The talks have become the very first official contact on trade rivalry since early December, when US President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping agreed to try and settle differences during the G20 summit in Argentina.

Trump imposed import tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars of Chinese goods past year and has threatened more to pressure Beijing to change its practices on issues ranging from industrial subsidies to intellectual property to hacking.

The developing downturn in China's economy explains why the U.S. believes it can force China to accept its demands in the face of the threat of another $US200 billion of tariffs on China's exports to the US.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said China had made "stern complaints" with the United States about the sighting of the warship, but the trade talks went ahead.

"Next week's negotiations are important because they will establish expectations", said Myron Brilliant, executive vice president and head of global affairs at the US Chamber of Commerce.

Beijing on Friday cut bank-reserve requirements amid slowing growth at home and pressure from the US tariffs.

The US-China trade imbalance will be a major theme during this week's bilateral trade talks.

Pauline Loong, head of the Hong-Kong based think-tank, Asia Analytica, told Al Jazeera China "wants an agreement to end the trade dispute as soon as possible". US stocks were poised to open steady following Friday's bumper gains, with Dow futures up 0.1 percent and the broader S&P 500 futures pointing to a 0.1 percent fall.

During that 90-day period, agreements "may not be reached until the last day", said Tu Xinquan, director of the China Institute for World Trade Organization Studies at the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing.

Upbeat employment report underscores USA economic strength
The ISM's new orders sub-index plunged 11 points to 51.1 last month, the lowest reading since August 2016. It needs to create roughly 100,000 jobs per month to keep up with growth in the working-age population.

"From the beginning, we have believed that China-US trade friction is not a positive situation for either country or the world economy".

China's foreign ministry on Monday confirmed that Wang would deliver a keynote speech at Davos.

Economists say the 90-day postponement of tariff increases that had been meant to take effect January 1 may be too short to settle the disputes bedeviling U.S.

The U.S. economy grew at an annual rate of 3.4 percent in the third quarter, and unemployment is at a five-decade low.

"It certainly has hurt the Chinese economy", Ross told CNBC. The move prompted China to increase tariffs on United States dollars 110 billion of U.S. goods.

Chinese officials are unhappy with US curbs on exports of "dual use" technology with possible military applications.

China is very particular about hierarchy, Prasad explained. The incident could have caused a collision, US officials said at a time.

The meeting comes amid rising concern about the impact of trade tensions on the global economy.

The current round of negotiations is being held at the vice-ministerial level, with the US' team of negotiators led by Deputy Trade Representative Jeffrey Gerrish.
