Google's New Fuchsia OS to Support Android Apps

Google's New Fuchsia OS to Support Android Apps

Forward-looking: We've known for a while now that Google is working on the eventual successor to Android: Fuchsia OS.

As spotted by 9to5Google, a change to the Android Open Source Project suggests Fuchsia will be able to run Android apps using the Android Runtime.

The fact that neither has been completely successful in doing so means the odds would be stacked against Fuchsia, but if they do get it right, would be a realisation of a holy grail in computing - able to work across chipsets and form factors.

So it looks as if Fuchsia OS is being created to use a unique version of the Android Runtime (ART) so that the platform could support Android applications.

AT&T Reportedly Developing Wireless Charger That Powers iPhone and Apple Watch Simultaneously
Apple did not immediately respond to PCMag's request for comment about the delay and its plans for AirPower . The carrier may have started developing the device when USB Type-C ports weren't so widely used.

While any further information on Fuchsia and Android integration isn't available, it would be safe to assume that Google intends to launch Fuchsia OS in the future in such a manner that it doesn't suffer the fate of Windows Mobile. It could run in a Linux virtual machine, or it could merely replace Linux kernel calls with equivalents from Fuchsia's Zircon kernel. Well, the answer to that question is... nobody knows, except maybe a few people over at Google. Developers can use the SDK to make Fuchsia apps. Google's plans regarding Fuchsia are a complete mystery at this point, as the company did not really talk about pre-installing this OS on any hardware or anything of the sort.

There's also mention of ART on Fuchsia supporting ARM64 and x86 architecture, which backs up rumors that the new OS will work on multiple devices such as PCs and tablets. We might, however, see Google's first official confirmation of Fuchsia at its I/O event this year.

Overall, this development means Fuchsia devices will run Android apps.
