World Series hero Eovaldi staying with Red Sox (4 years, $68 million)

Nathan Eovaldi's marathon relief performance in Game 3 of the World Series is a moment that will resonate in Red Sox history.

Despite the risk, it's still a move the Red Sox had to make. They didn't want to go past 3 years on Eovaldi, who is a hero in Boston anyway. He missed the 2017 season while recuperating from Tommy John surgery. That $17 million per season price tag lines up with the predicted contract Eovaldi would receive, so the Red Sox didn't retain his services on any kind of discount. He made four starts against the Yankees, going 2-0 with a 0.39 ERA, and beat the NY in Game 3 of the AL Division Series, when he gave up one run in seven innings.

Terms of the deal weren't divulged, but multiple reports peg the deal to be worth $68 million.

The Yankees spent a king's ransom last season to acquire NL MVP Giancarlo Stanton from the Miami Marlins. Out of 140 pitchers with at least 100 innings, that was the seventh-lowest walk rate, right up there in Corey Kluber/Justin Verlander territory. After all, out of those 140 pitchers, Eovaldi was just middle of the pack - 67th - in strikeout rate.

As for the specific Yankees free agency plans, MLB Network insider Jon Heyman has the scoop on who the team is going after next. Remaining unsigned players who became free agents after winning the Series include closer Craig Kimbrel, left-hander Drew Pomeranz, right-hander Joe Kelly and second basemen Brandon Phillips and Ian Kinsler. For now, Eovaldi still has more value as a starter.

With that, the Red Sox have a almost complete roster four days before the start of the Winter Meetings, when the offseason usually kicks into high gear. The Red Sox had an Opening Day payroll of about $233 million previous year and were projected to spend about $220 million in 2019 before Eovaldi.
