Man coughs up blood clot in shape of a lung

A 36-year-old California man has passed away after suffering from chronic heart failure and coughing so severely that he coughed up a part of his lung.

Wieselthaler told the Atlantic that in this case, the patient had an infection that increased levels of a protein called fibrinogen, which helps blood clots form; and higher levels of fibrinogen could have helped the man's large clot to stay intact when it was coughed up.

On Monday, the New England Journal of Medicine tweeted a startling picture as part of its "Images in Clinical Medicine" photo series, which features photos of medical anomalies.

A man coughed up a weird blood clot that was practically a copy of the inside of his lung, astonishing doctors around the world.

After days of coughing up tiny blood clots, the man eventually - much to his relief - spat up a cast of his right lung's bronchial tree.

The 36-year old man was being treated for a serious heart condition, according to a new report of the case, published November 29 in The New England Journal of Medicine.

Tyler Perry pays off layaway items at 2 Georgia Walmart stores
In a social media video, Perry said Thursday he meant to do the good deed anonymously, "but nothing stays secret these days". Perry's gesture applied to layaways that were already in the stores as of 9:30 a.m. local time on December 6.

The case is documented in the New England Journal of Medicine, where it is narrated that during an extreme bout of coughing, the patient spontaneously expectorated an intact case of the right bronchial tree.

Per the Atlantic, Wieselthaler said that the use of the pump requires anticoagulants to "make the blood thinner and prevent clots from forming", though that comes with the risk of uncontrolled internal bleeding.

During the week of his hospitalization the man's cough reportedly progressed to coughing up blood and phlegm.

"We were astonished", Wieselthaler said.

The patient was later extubated and "had no further episodes of hemoptysis", the doctors wrote, but a week later he unfortunately "died from complications of heart failure (volume overload and poor cardiac output) despite placement of the ventricular assist device".

In 2005, a heavily pregnant woman coughed up a similar but smaller bronchial tree clot.
