Google Waves Goodbye to Allo

Google Waves Goodbye to Allo

Google Allo, the messaging app it launched back in September 2016, is being shut down. When Hangouts is shut down, Google can better diversify its messaging user base across its five remaining apps, I guess. By the way, Google mentions the current momentum of the Messages app as the reason for the setting. Now Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet were supposed to replace Hangouts "classic" but so far it hasn't.

Therefore, Google is focusing on their core chatting app also known as Messages, which is the RCS-capable app that adds modern functionality to SMS on Android iMessages.

As for Hangouts, the other unclear entry in Google's family of messaging apps, Google previously announced that it would "evolve" Hangouts into separate Hangout Chats and Hangouts Meet experiences for businesses.

After a couple of new reports attempted to share Google's timeline for shuffling around its messaging apps, possibly killing a couple of them, the company made a decision to explain their plans in their own words. According to a report published on 9to5Google, the company has halted the development of Google Allo program for the last two months as it has not seen any drastic change in popularity.

World Series hero Eovaldi staying with Red Sox (4 years, $68 million)
As for the specific Yankees free agency plans, MLB Network insider Jon Heyman has the scoop on who the team is going after next. Nathan Eovaldi's marathon relief performance in Game 3 of the World Series is a moment that will resonate in Red Sox history.

This year we launched Duo support for iPad, Android Tablet, Chromebook, and Smart Displays, giving you more flexibility to make calls from your favorite devices. It will continue to work on making Hangouts a more enterprise focused product - a Slack competitor to be precise.

All of which is to say - there's a little bit more of an overarching vision now that ties Google's messaging properties together. A leak claiming as much surfaced earlier today, and now Google has confirmed the news, this following its "pause" on investment revealed earlier this year. "Hangouts users will be upgraded to Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet". Allo users are advised to export their chat history, and look for an alternative app for everyday instant messaging. It'll keep its Duo video calling service around for the foreseeable future, though.

Shuttering Allo comes as Google focuses on RCS (Rich Communications Services) messaging, which is being supported by an increasing number of carriers.
