Alabama's Tua Tagovailoa wins Walter Camp Award

Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray split top honors on a college football awards night that only has momentum building towards Saturday night's Heisman Trophy announcement.

AP player of the year Kyler Murray adds the Davey O'Brien Award as the nation's top quarterback as ESPN's College Football Awards show in Atlanta began. Tagovailoa and Murray will be joined by Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins as finalists. He beat out Oklahoma's Kyler Murray and West Virginia's Will Grier for the award.

While Tagovailoa was voted the best player, he didn't win best quarterback. Tagovailoa received 13 first-place votes (117 points) and Haskins was listed first on four ballots (55 points). The past five winners of the Walter Camp Award won the Heisman, while the past four Maxwell winners did the same. As a result, Murray is the fifth Sooner to take home the award, joining Sam Bradford (2008), White (2003, '04) and running back Billy Sims (1978). McCarron was the last Maxwell Award victor to not win the Heisman.

The victor of the award will be announced Saturday in New York City. The Oakland Athletics took Murray with the ninth pick in the Major League Baseball draft in June.

Murray was Mayfield's backup last season and won the starter's job in preseason practice.

The Allen, Texas, product has completed 241 of 340 passes this year for 4,053 yards and 40 touchdowns to seven interceptions.

Murray leads the country in total offense (4,945 yards), points responsible for (306) and passing efficiency (205.7).
