Iran wants to expand missile range despite US opposition

Iran's U.N. Mission said that the country's ballistic missile program is purely defensive and a "deterrent tool against foreign threats" and declared that the country isn't violating the resolution.

"Iran's recent ballistic missile test was risky and concerning, but not surprising", US Ambassador Nikki Haley said in a statement.

Iran's United Nations mission said in a statement on Tuesday that Tehran was not in breach of the resolution and that its missiles were only created to be capable of delivering conventional - not nuclear - warheads. Hook asked. "In fact, Iran's security concerns are entirely self generated".

However, diplomats said they were now trying to limit the fallout of the decision by staggering the expected USA withdrawal into next year and first formally accusing Russian Federation of breaking the INF agreement, which rid Europe of land-based nuclear missiles.

Qassemi also criticized Western states for their double-standard policies and said he regretted that they take such belligerent stances on Iran's peaceful defence programme.

The test was conducted by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps on Saturday, just two days after Hook's exhibition at joint base Anacostia-Bolling in Washington, DC.

Earlier on Sunday, Iran's Foreign Ministry dismissed the USA charges that Iran's ballistic missile tests have violated the UNSCR 2231 as "ridiculous".

"We will continue to both develop and test missiles".

In a Tuesday statement, Qassemi said there is no need to repeat that Iran's missile program is totally deterrent in nature and is part of the country's unstoppable defence programs. Yet, they also neither confirmed, nor denied the test.

While the U.S. has withdrawn from the nuclear deal, Europe - including the United Kingdom and France - have remained committed to keeping the agreement alive.

"While [the United States] itself violates [UN Security Council resolution] 2231 - and even threatens to punish those who don't wish to violate it in abiding with illegal US sanctions - it now falsely accuses Iran of violating the very SAME resolution", Mr. Zarif added.

France's U.N. Ambassador Francois Delattre said his government has condemned the December 1 launch as "inconsistent" with the 2015 resolution and has called on Iran to immediately halt all activity related to ballistic missiles "designed to be able to carry nuclear weapons, including launches using ballistic missile technology".

"Iran is among the world's top powers in building missiles, radars, armoured vehicles and unmanned aerial vehicles", Hatami told official IRNA news agency, reports Xinhua.

This pressure, together with more broad-minded pressure from the White House, may serve to amplify the "cracks" that Fox News reported to be showing in the "Iran deal coalition" on Tuesday. Officials have previously boasted of increasing their missile range and have specifically highlighted their supposed ability to strike USA bases in Afghanistan, the United Arab Emirates, and elsewhere.
