Google is shutting down its Allo messaging service

In a recent blog post, Google outlines its renewed focus on Android Messages and Duo when it comes to consumer chat apps, with Chat and Meet being focused on businesses.

When they are shut down, Allo and Hangouts will join Google Talk, Google Spaces, Google Wave, Google+ Messenger, and Google Buzz in the graveyard of former Google messaging apps. Android Messages and Duo will be a two-pronged attack. As the original article notes, there has been no activity from Google to update the platform or address a myriad of user problems, and the developer lead has left Google and moved on to Facebook. In a way, this should provide some clarity on the current state of Google's messaging app ecosystem and which apps you'll want to pay the most attention to.

The instant messaging app never took off the way Google would've hoped.

As for Hangouts, the venerable chat app that launched with Google+, the company basically confirmed it would go away at some point last week, with users being "upgraded" to the Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet services now available for businesses.

For the dustbin: Hangouts Classic and Allo. Instead, Google will shift its focus to Android Messages, and bringing new features to the app, to make the SMS experience more efficient. "Given Messages' continued momentum, we've chose to stop supporting Allo to focus on Messages", Klainer wrote on Thursday.

The company has said that the users will be able to export their conversation history from the app. Until that happens, Google is apparently "fully committed to supporting Hangouts users in the meantime". Today, Google is confirming that in March 2019, Allo will no longer work. The Enterprise-only services Hangout Chats and Hangout Meets will be made available to consumers in the future.

Meanwhile, Google will focus on Messages.

As the shutdown time of the Google Allo is very much know, Verizon will be launching the RCS Chat on Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL smartphone on December 6. According to 9to5Google, we can soon expect Google to announce the beginning of the end for the company's short-lived chat app.
