Usman Khawaja's brother arrested by counter-terrorism police over fake terror plot

Australian cricket star Usman Khawaja hung his head in his hands as tears welled in his eyes during training on Tuesday - just hours after he learned his brother had been arrested for allegedly faking a terror plot to frame his love rival.

Arsakan Khawaja had been arrested by the police in the suburban Sydney on Tuesday and now is being investigated regarding the case and producing false documents, which had the target list of high-profile people and imply his former university colleague Nizamdeen.

He is due to appear in court on charges forgery by making a false document, attempting to pervert justice and lying to police.

"The arrest relates to documents allegedly found on University of NSW grounds in August this year containing plans to facilitate terrorism attacks", the statement read.

Mohamed Kamer Nilar Nizamdeen, who has returned to Sri Lanka, plans to sue for compensation after being detained in Goulburn's Supermax jail following his arrest in August.

However Nizamdeen, 25, was released without charge in October, after it was demonstrated that the handwriting in the notebook did not belong to him.

"We believe this was planned and it was calculated", Mick Willing, the assistant commissioner of the New South Wales Counter Terrorism and Special Tactics Command, told reporters on Tuesday.

An alleged hit list included the former Australian prime minister Malcolm Turnbull and landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House.

"Out of respect for the process, it would be inappropriate for me to make any further comments".

He said there is no ongoing threat to the community.

The police went on to add that there was a case of being partly motivated by a "personal grievance" over a woman.

Usman Khawaja was born in Pakistan and was first selected for Australia in the Ashes series of 2010.

Police will hold a press conference at 12.30pm.

Mr Willing on Tuesday said Mr Nizamdeen's arrest was regrettable and police have paid his court costs, but stopped short of apologising.

Nizamdeen's exact relationship with Khawaja has not been stated by police. "We feel sorry for him and what has happened to him (but) we had to act early at the time, given the threats contained in that notebook".
