Sri Lankan court bars Rajapaksa from acting as Prime Minister

President Maithripala Sirisena has been under pressure to prove his appointee Rajapakse - a divisive but charismatic strongman who twice ruled Sri Lanka - commands support.

Sirisena came to power in 2015 on a pledge to uphold democracy and stamp out corruption, but his popularity has been hit by a crisis many say he triggered because of personal differences with former Prime Minister Wickremesinghe.

The sources said the president may now rescind the order, effectively pre-empting a court ruling that they expect to overturn his decision anyway. On Monday evening, the President told lawmakers from Mr. Wickremesinghe's front that he would not restore him in the office of the PM "even if all 225 members of Parliament" backed him.

Sri Lanka's Court of Appeal issued an interim order preventing newly appointed prime minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and his government's ministers from exercising powers until it hears a petition challenging their authority.

The court issued its order on Monday after 122 members of Sri Lanka's parliament, who are allied with ousted prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, filed a legal action on November 23 challenging Rajapaksa's authority as prime minister.

She has said that training to spacewalk resembled the sport since it demands "grit, toughness, mental focus, and more". The crew was reporting that all was going well in the critical initial minutes after liftoff and were safely in orbit.

The decision puts a further brake on Mr Rajapaksa's disputed Government after Parliament voted last week to halt payment of ministers' salaries and travel expenses.

Their position "was that Rajapakse had no legitimacy after losing two no-confidence motions", lawyer and legislator M. A. Sumanthiran told reporters after the decision. The apex court is expected to deliver its verdict on Friday or the following week.

He said Wickremesinghe destroyed him too to a certain extent.

"There is a possibility of withdrawing the gazette", said a source in regular discussion with Sirisena, referring to the official announcement by which the president dissolved parliament. Unable to muster the required numbers in the House, their MPs have refused to accept the outcome - of a majority voting against Mr. Rajapaksa and his purported government.
