Migrant caravan relocated to new shelter farther from the border

The thousands of predominantly Central American migrants who have died or gone missing on the journey to the US are among 56,800 people-including refugees and asylum seekers-worldwide who have died or disappeared since 2014, the AP has found in a separate report.

Over 700 miles to the west, in Tijuana, dozens of caravan migrants climbed over the fence to be detained by Border Patrol on the California side.

Mexico has offered asylum to the members of the caravan, but many are still trying to make their way to the United States.

Central American migrants stuck on the threshold of the United States in Mexico breached the border fence on Monday, risking nearly certain detention by U.S. authorities but hoping the illegal entry will allow them to apply for asylum.

McAleenan said that migrants are also illegally crossing the border in Yuma, Arizona, where video shows parents literally dropping their children over the fence.

Reuters reported that other migrants managed to squeeze through the fence on the beach.

Melanie Hernandez, a migrant at the new shelter, said the desperate situation created by the rain has "improved the humanitarian response" offered by Mexican and USA non-governmental organizations, many of whom are offering clothes, medical care and some legal services.

The six people are all part of the same family from Guatemala and included three children: a 2-year-old, a 7-year-old and a 10-year-old.

The child that suffered a facial injury was treated by border patrol agents, according to CBP.

Agents took the group of six Guatemalan nationals into custody and transported them to the station for processing.

"We're just observing, waiting to see what happens", Mayeni said.

Some migrants may hope to defeat the odds and penetrate one of the most fortified sections of the southern U.S. border.

Ninety minutes later, she and her family were over the fence. They turned around and waved to those still on the Mexican side. "On the news, they keep saying there are more people coming, so some patients are saying let's wait for the situation to cool down and then we'll set up another appointment later". "It's a huge challenge that we need to work with Congress to address. We've got criminal organizations profiting off of vulnerable families, charging $5000-$7000 per person".
