National Lampoon-themed Christmas display causes panic

The Heerlein family in Austin, Texas, made a decision to recreate the decoration scene in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, complete with a hanging Clark Griswold.

Chris Heerlein suspended the dummy from the roof of his house and placed a ladder underneath the dummy to make it appear as if the ladder had tipped over.

The Heerlein family just wanted to win their neighborhood holiday decorating contest when they put up a display paying homage to a scene from National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation earlier this week, according to KVUE.

The man was unable to reach the dummy, so he called 911 to report a person in danger.

The family said they bought the dummy online and decked it out in a Chevy Chase mask and clothes like those the actor wore in the film.

Since then, the family has added a sign to the bottom of the display that explains the decoration.

Austin police eventually arrived after the 911 call.

Ms Wheless said: "He was doing everything he could to get the ladder!"

Following the incident, the family felt so bad about Alfred's reaction.

The Good Samaritan, a retired veteran by the name of Alfred, took it all in stride once he realized the display was not real. So, they called him, thanked him and are giving him a gift card as an apology.

He told ABC 13: "I was trying to get him down any way I can. Except when I started talking to him, he never said nothing!" "Let me call 911,"' Norwood said to KVUE.
