DJ apologises after asking Ballon d'Or victor Hegerberg to twerk

Hegerberg made history as the first victor of the women's Ballon d'Or but her moment in the spotlight was sullied by Martin Solveig, a French DJ who was on stage for the award.

"I'm a little amazed and astonished with what I'm reading on the internet, of course I didn't want to offend anyone", he said.

England defender and Ballon d'Or nominee Lucy Bronze, a team-mate of Hegerberg at Lyon, told BBC Sport it was "just a joke".

"It is a fantastic day for women's football.it is important to show young girls that they can believe in themselves and I hope they are inspired by this".

Inexplicably, Solveig then asked the 23-year-old "do you know how to twerk?" in a suggestive manner.

The Norwegian global scooped the coveted prize at the ceremony in Paris following a stunning 42-goal season, including 15 in the Champions League for club Lyon as they won the competition for the third consecutive year. My point was I don't invite women to twerk but dance on a Sinatra song, ' said in a video on Twitter. I did not know that this could be seen as such an offence.

NASA's InSight lander is about to touch down and will immediately begin to decipher the secrets that lie beneath the Martian soil. The goal of the instrument is to provide a definitive measurement of the heat still flowing out from the interior of Mars .

Responding to the criticism, Solveig tweeted: "Sincere apologies to the one I may have offended".

"For the first time a woman will win football's highest honour".

Taking a stand against what she describes as a lack of respect for female players in Norway, she hasn't played for the national team since 2017 when it crashed out of the group stage of the Women's European Championship without scoring a goal. I didn't really think about it at the time to be honest.

"A lot of things need to be done to make the conditions better for women who play football", Hegerberg said after collecting her Ballon d'Or award.

In response to the backlash, Solveig issued an apology insisting that he has always had the utmost respect for women.

The men's award was taken out by Real Madrid and Croatia midfielder Luka Modric, ending a decade of dominance by Modric's former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi.
