British government found in contempt of UK Parliament over Brexit legal advice

The vote comes immediately after MPs voted to find Theresa May's government in contempt of parliament over its failure to publish its legal advice on the Brexit deal.

The move came after opposition parties led by Labour and the Democratic Unionist Party attacked ministers for publishing only a summary of the Brexit advice, despite a vote on November 13 demanding full publication.

But the Commons is not satisfied with a summary of the advice - they want the full legal advice to be published.

They hope this will allow parliament to express its support for alternative approaches - and prevent the government either hurtling towards a no-deal Brexit without the backing of MPs, or imposing a plan B of its own devising.

British Prime Minister Theresa May is facing a full-blown constitutional crisis after the speaker's ruling.

The proceedings come ahead of five days of debate over May's Brexit deal, before a vote on whether to approve it on December 11.

But his words did little to soothe some of the deal's most caustic critics, where many Brexit supporters said the so-called backstop for Northern Ireland risked tying Britain into the EU's customs union indefinitely.

This is a far greater concern for No 10 than sanctioning of the government or a minister for contempt, which helps explain why the prime minister has deployed leading Brexiteers Mr Cox and Michael Gove, the environment secretary, in the past two days to try and sell her imperfect deal to Brexiteer MPs.

Politicians on both sides of Britain's European Union membership debate oppose the agreement - pro-Brexit legislators because it keeps Britain bound closely to the European Union, and pro-EU politicians because it erects barriers between the United Kingdom and its biggest trading partner.

A cross-party motion was filed by a group of MPs, including Labour, DUP, Lib Dems, SNP.

May's opponents argue that Britain can renegotiate the deal for better terms.

The PM will have 21 days to give a statement as to what she intends to do next, but during that time Labour could table a no confidence motion in the Commons, which could force her out if she loses.

The UK should be able to unilaterally cancel its withdrawal from the EU, according to a top European law officer.

May's spokesman, James Slack, said the opinion didn't change "the clear position of the government that Article 50 is not going to be revoked".

Attorney General Geoffrey Cox was dispatched to field MPs' questions and promised he would answer whatever they wanted to know.
