Honda reveals 2019 Passport ahead of Los Angeles Auto Show

In terms of features, the Passport SUV is quite well kitted.

Designed in its entirety by Honda's US -based R&D teams, the V6-powered Passport is clearly meant to appeal to consumers on this continent.

The trims will run like the rest of the Hondas with Sport, EX-L with leather, touring and elite trims.

This new auto is based on the same technology as the Pilot and the Ridgeline pickup, though the Passport has a distinct look of its own which sets it apart from the pack and tells fans that this is a new generation for Honda. It's still not a rock crawler like a Jeep Grand Cherokee, but it should take you further down a rocky road than any Honda SUV before it.

The Passport's interior boasts a 100 cubic-foot maximum cargo capacity with the rear seat folded flat.

Upgrades include wireless device charging, a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot with a free 3-month/3GB trial period, HondaLink subscription services, a 10-speaker premium sound system, and navigation.

The Honda Sensing safety suite of technologies is standard including collision-mitigation braking system featuring forward collision warning, road-departure mitigation including lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance system and adaptive cruise control. A multi-angle reverse camera and a seven-inch instrument display are standard-fit. Blind-spot monitors come standard on EX-L and higher trims. It's hooked up to a nine-speed automatic, and is available in front-wheel drive or with a torque-vectoring all-wheel drive system. In light of the shorter rear overhang, Honda has positioned the vehicle as a more off-road-capable SUV, with a 28 mm increase in ride height (15 mm on front-wheel drive models) said to improve approach, departure and breakover angles. From a marketing perspective, at least, this five-passenger SUV is bucking the trend towards soft-roaders that are utility vehicles in name only. Additionally, an intelligent traction management system equips the SUV with Snow, Sand, and Mud driving modes.

The 2019 Honda Passport goes on sale early next year. And while it could be seen as a replacement for the Accord, as more and more auto buyers opt for SUVs, Honda Assistant Vice President of Product Planning Jay Joseph says the company expects it to add overall sales rather than cannibalize them from other models.
