California wildfires: Footage gives terrifying perspective of evacuation

The death toll in Northern California's massive wildfire climbed to 29 after six more bodies were recovered from the fire zone on Sunday, making it the deadliest wildfire in the history of the western US state of California. It matched California's record for deaths in a single fire.

Almost 230 people were still unaccounted for, he said. The U.S. Forest Service has dispatched two crews numbering 32 people to assist, according to the department.

At least five search teams were working in Paradise - a town of 27,000 that was largely incinerated on Thursday - and in surrounding communities.

All told, more 8,000 firefighters statewide were battling wildfires that scorched more than 325 square miles (840 square kilometers), with the flames feeding on dry brush and driven by winds that had a blowtorch effect. A one-day lull in the dry, northeasterly winds ended Sunday morning and authorities warn that the gusts will continue through Tuesday.

"This is truly a tragedy that all Californians can understand and respond to", Gov.

"The president of the United States is ignorant of the process of forest management and wildfires", he said.

"California is vulnerable - not because of poor forest management as DT (our so-called president) would have us think", Young wrote on his website.

"This weighs heavy on all of us", Honea said.

"We're putting everything we've got into the fight against these fires and this request ensures communities on the front lines get additional federal aid", Brown's letter said.

"More than 4,000 are fighting the Camp and Woolsey Fires in California that have burned over 170,000 acres", Trump tweeted.

This fire season follows a particularly deadly set of California wildfires a year ago.

But with strong winds projected through the beginning of the new week, containing the fire will be more hard.

Miley Cyrus is the latest celebrity who has lost their home in the Woolsey Fire.

As of Sunday night, the Woolsey Fire had spread to 85,000 acres and was 15 percent contained.

Actor Gerard Butler and singer Robin Thicke are among the celebrities to lose their homes in the worst bushfires in Californian history that have killed at least 25 people and forced 300,000 to evacuate.

But there were tiny signs of some sense of order returning to Paradise and anonymous gestures meant to rally the spirits of firefighters who have worked in a burned-over wasteland for days. The "Camp Fire", which began Thursday, has taken at least 29 lives and destroyed more than 6,700 structures, nearly all of them homes.

The devastation was so complete in some neighbourhoods that "it's very hard to determine whether or not there may be human remains there", Mr Honea said.

Public safety officials toured the Paradise area to begin discussing the recovery process.

"Most of the residential [area] is gone".

But the tweet sparked fierce condemnation from the International Association of Fire Fighters.

Thicke also posted a statement on Instagram thanking firefighters and volunteers who "risked their lives trying to save our home". Julia, describe what you're standing in, what's left of this town? "I'm devastated by all that's happening", the Beverly Hills, 90210 actress posted on Instagram.

As the search for victims dragged on, friends and relatives of the missing called hospitals, police, shelters and the coroner's office in hopes of learning what became of their loved ones.

Meanwhile, a nurse has revealed how she thought she was going to die when her auto was engulfed in flames as she tried to drive to safety.

Another added: "So sorry but so glad you're safe".

More than 8,000 firefighters have been battling the three large wildfires burning across almost 400 square miles of northern and southern California, with out-of-state crews arriving to help.

Orange County Fire Authority officials say they have sent 20 engines to assist with the fires in Los Angeles and Ventura counties, and firefighters have come in from off time to ensure that every OCFA fire station is adequately staffed.

He said officials were moving resources and preparing for "the next set of fires" as winds are expected to pick up.
