Whitaker appointment brings praise and protest in Iowa

Given his role in the Trump campaign, Sessions had recused himself from overseeing the special counsel's investigation into potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation in the 2016 election, leaving oversight of the Mueller investigation to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. Sessions' chief of staff Matthew Whitaker was asked to take the helm of the Justice Department until a new Attorney General is confirmed by the Senate.

That drew criticism from Democrats because Whitaker, who would now take over responsibility for overseeing Mueller and his investigation, has been critical of the Mueller probe, saying it should be scaled back. Never having gone through a Senate hearing, he is now under scrutiny for his background as a bare-knuckled Republican activist and director of a now-defunct invention-promotion company that the Federal Trade Commission said "bilked thousands of consumers out of millions of dollars".

Protests in at least 900 cities nationwide, aimed at protecting Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, are planned for Thursday.

"Today, we saw a lot of people come out because they're really concerned about the firing of Jeff Sessions and the move to put Matt Whitaker in charge of the special counsel investigation", Forsythe said.

"You must be aware that your public comments criticizing Mr. Mueller's investigation have been widely circulated", the attorneys general wrote to Whitaker.

Thanking Sessions for his service, Romney said that it was "imperative that the important work of the Justice Department continues, and that the Mueller investigation proceeds to its conclusion unimpeded". "In my role as a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, I look forward to meeting with acting Attorney General Whitaker soon and have confidence he will do a professional job in this position".

"A big complaint people have - Mueller was not Senate confirmed ... why didn't they get him confirmed?" the president wondered.

In his comments Friday, he said he had not spoken with Whitaker about Mueller's investigation, which until now has been overseen by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

In an interview with Reuters, Clovis said Whitaker is "a wonderful man" and "a dear friend".

While Whitaker is now Mueller's ultimate supervisor, it was not immediately clear whether that meant Rosenstein would step aside. Whitaker did, however, believe that Sessions had no choice but to recuse himself from the matter, the person said.

Toomey said he had no reason to think the Mueller probe would be disrupted.

Boone said Graham's defense of Trump is "a far cry" from his 2017 promises.

In any of those instances, a House investigation against the president could ensue with or without Mueller's report.
