Trump vows to fight against Democrats in the wake of midterm defeat

In an extraordinarily combative news conference Wednesday after voters delivered him a rebuke by giving control of the House to Democrats, President Trump went after Republicans, Democrats and the media.

The Democrats gained more than the 23 seats they needed for a majority in the 435-seat House of Representatives.

Some Democrats said during their campaigns that they would not back Pelosi, but it's not clear yet whether there are any Democrats willing to challenge her for the post. "They know that can backfire and help Trump, as it did with President Clinton", says Mr. Thurber.

Sanders called the narrow defeat of Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, a progressive populist he called his favorite candidate of the 2018 cycle, in the Florida gubernatorial race the most disappointing outcome on an otherwise positive night. An equal number of white women gave their votes to Democrats (49 percent) as to Republicans (49 percent).

A rough analysis of the races showed 18 Democrats who either were victorious or were leading won their races by five percentage points or fewer.

But the rosiest expectations of some Democrats - that they could create a "blue wave" even when playing defense on the Senate map - proved unfounded.

"These are seats that could've been held pretty easily".

Two 29-year-old Democrats - Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Abby Finkenauer - are due to be the youngest women ever to win House seats.

Now with Democrats in control of the House, if Trump's companies or other interests ignore their subpoenas or try legal maneuvers to delay or spurn them, they could face a contempt citation to the House floor.

"It really could be a handsome, bipartisan type of situation".

Emily Davis, a spokeswoman for the office of U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, said the agency was "very confident" that Congress will approve the current deal because of the benefits to U.S. workers and businesses.

"We're going to have to do some soul searching", he added.

She said she would not move to impeach Mr Trump unless at least some Republicans were on board. She also referenced Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters of California, another favorite Trump villain, who is set to lead the powerful Financial Services Committee.

Asked why she was confident she could achieve bipartisanship, she quoted civil rights icon Martin Luther King and former President Ronald Reagan as inspiration.

What does a Democrat win mean for the Trump government?
Democrat house candidate Sharice Davids reacts before speaking to supporters at a victory party in Olathe, Kan., Nov. 6, 2018. But the GOP held on to big prizes, narrowly keeping the OH and Florida governors' mansions despite spirited opposition.

Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell said he expected the president would be able to work with a divided Congress.

A spokesman for Deutsche Bank said the bank was committed to cooperating with authorized investigations.

But Republican voter James Gerlock, 27, said he wanted to see more of the soaring economic growth that Trump says is the fruit of his business-friendly policies.

"I don't think we'll have any trouble finding time to do nominations", he told reporters.

Asked about it on Monday, Mr Trump replied stiffly: "I don't care".

"I've watched Nancy Pelosi's career from the time she got there".

He said that holds true for the spending bills Congress must still negotiate by early December.

Michigan's urban-rural divide "may be more stark now that population is moving more into urban and metropolitan areas, but that means that the suburbs begin to play a much bigger role, and I think we saw that in MI and across the country", he said.

And then the White House would hope "Republicans take the House (of Representatives in the 2020 election) and nobody is demanding (the tax returns) at that point".

He said he was waiting on the Florida results and possible recount, and said Arizona is "not close to over" with perhaps 600,000 ballots still outstanding. In the final analysis, after being out of power in the House for the better part of a decade, Democrats are looking ahead to curbing Trumpism.

Republicans defeated Democratic senators in several states won by Trump in 2016 - Florida, Indiana, Missouri and North Dakota. Randy Vulakovich's seat in Allegheny County, as is Republican Sen.

For example, Cummings and other Democratic lawmakers past year filed a federal lawsuit demanding disclosures of records to determine how Trump was approved by the General Services Administration to maintain the lease of the Trump International Hotel in Washington after he became president. "If the argument is that suddenly Trump becomes an advocate for a $15 minimum wage is going to make him more popular, more hard to beat (in 2020), I don't see it that way".

He touted the successes of the candidates he stumped for, singling out Pennsylvania's newly-elected lieutenant governor, John Fetterman, Michigan Govenor-elect Gretchen Whitmer, whose primary opponent he endorsed before traveling to Ann Arbor last month in a show of support for the nominee, Wisconsin Sen. "Some close races, some races that didn't go the Republican way, midterm elections - all those things come into play".

Democrats will pick up between seven to nine House seats in this region, and while they came up short in the Iowa governor's race, they now control three of the four House seats there.
