Georgia in top five of College Football Playoff rankings

The top five: Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame, Michigan and Georgia.

The playoff picture cleared up after a weekend where several contenders asserted themselves. All nine teams are in action on Saturday, including four teams on the road, two of whom - Clemson (at No. 17 Boston College) and Ohio State (at No. 18 Michigan State) play ranked teams. However, with the Tide's win over former No. 3 LSU over the weekend, there was a change at the top of the rankings.

Unbeaten Notre Dame moved up one spot to No. 3 and MI jumped a spot after a 42-7 victory against Penn State. That's important because, barring chaos, the true Playoff hopefuls will all likely sit in the committee's updated top 10 this week - and remaining schedules suggest that chaos isn't likely to happen. The 3 p.m. contest will be televised by CBS.

After Sessions’ Resignation, Boston Will Join Nationwide Rally for the Mueller Investigation
Trump repeatedly lamented that he would have never selected Sessions if he had known the attorney general would recuse himself . Mueller is investigating Russia's alleged interference in the 2016 election and any collusion by Trump's campaign.

Our Matt Kenerly projected the top 25 and his version has the Aggies on the outside looking in, and the Bulldogs ranked in those projections. The selection committee clearly values Clemson's strength of schedule, and the Tigers have another opportunity Saturday to punctuate their résumé by clinching the division with a victory over BC. "Bottom line is pretty much every team that's in there, if they win, they are in, because a lot of them are going to play each other". All things being equal, Texas would earn the tiebreaker over the Sooners by virtue of its head-to-head win in this year's Red River game, and it would be the Longhorns who earn a championship rematch, only with West Virginia. The good news for the Bulldogs is beating Alabama to win the SEC championship would nearly certainly make up for a second regular-season loss. West Virginia had a huge win at Texas and will move up.

Utah fell out, leaving the Pac-12 with only two ranked teams, No. 10 Washington State and No. 20 Washington. Not awful. To get to 11-1 and a Big 12 title could mean two victories over Oklahoma in consecutive weekends. Winning out, including at Ohio State, puts Jim Harbaugh's team at 12-1 with a Big Ten title. Also, Georgia and Alabama host No. 24 Auburn and No. 16 Mississippi State.
