At Least 12 Dead in California Bar Shooting

The massacre in Thousand Oaks was the latest USA shooting rampage and came less than two weeks after a man shot dead 11 worshippers at a Pittsburgh synagogue.

Seven months later, officers swarmed his home again for a very different reason: a mass shooting.

Former U.S. Marine combat veteran Ian David Long, 28, entered the bar and opened fire before apparently killing himself, law enforcement officials said.

Ventura County Sheriff's Office Capt. Garo Kuredjian said at a news conference early Thursday that a sheriff's deputy was also shot and taken to a hospital.

'She would see how many people loved her, ' Williams said, fighting back tears.

The shooting happened on college night.

Police say Long was dressed in black from head to toe.

Long was armed with a Glock 21, a.45-caliber pistol created to hold 10 rounds plus one in the chamber, according to the sheriff. The weapon had an extended magazine, but law enforcement has not determined how many rounds it could hold with the modification, or whether the shooter reloaded the weapon during the shooting.

Julie Hanson, who lives next door to Long's ranch-style home, described him as "odd" and "disrespectful" well before he left home a decade ago, got married and enlisted in the Marines, becoming a machine-gunner.

Survivors of the Las Vegas shooting say they have used the bar as a place to meet up in recent months. That number does not include an annual estimate of 22,000 suicides via firearms.

Late Wednesday evening, 12 people were killed in the attack at Borderline Bar and Grill in California.
