Two Tonnes Of Smelly Durian Fruit Temporarily Grounds Flight After Passenger Complaints

Passengers disembarked the Sriwijaya Air flight, bound for Jakarta from Bengkulu on Sumatra Island, after complaining that the odour in the cabin would make flying unbearable.

A journalist with the local Antara news agency reported that several passengers began arguing with flight attendants and nearly came to physical blows, said Australia's ABC news.

In April, the smell of durian rotting in a cupboard at an Australian university's library was mistaken for a gas leak, the Associated Press reported.

But Zidane said that despite the complaints, the pilot had decided the fruit - the smell of which some find nauseating - would remain stored in the cabin during the flight.

The durian is known for being one of the grossest-smelling fruits in the world-think "turpentine and onions, garnished with a gym sock", as one food writer has described it, per Smithsonian.

After passengers who had already boarded the plane chose to get off, the staff made a decision to acquiesce and unloaded the fruit, a process that delayed the flight by an hour but it landed safely in Jakarta.

"Durian is not classified as a hazardous material to be transported on a plane", Abdul said.

The standoff ended when boarded passengers began to get off the flight.

Eventually, all the passengers were asked to leave the plane as workers unloaded the reeking cargo. His Facebook post about the incident has been shard more than 20,000 times as of Wednesday afternoon.

"It's not illegal to carry durian in a flight as long as it is wrapped properly in accordance with flight regulations - carried inside the hold", a Sriwijaya Air spokesperson said in a statement.

Realising he wasn't the only one unhappy, Amir Zidane rallied support, writing in his post: "I yelled at the other passengers 'Who on this plane wants to fly?'". Passengers on the ground later recorded crews unloading the shipment of durian from the cargo area.
