USA mid-term elections: Democrats retake House, Republicans retain Senate, say networks

That was enough to give pundits confidence in calling the overall race for a majority in the House.

Democrats now need to win only nine more Republican House seats to reach the net gain of 23 seats they need to secure a majority.

Georgia had the most high-profile governor's race.

In suburban areas where key House races will be decided, voters skewed significantly toward Democrats by a almost 10-point margin. In Florida, Democrat Donna Shalala, the former president of the University of Miami and Cabinet member during the Clinton administration, was on track to defeat Republican Maria Elvira Salazar, a broadcast journalist of Cuban heritage, according to early results. The degree to which we see voters emphasize any of these issues in their exit poll responses could be a sign of Republican versus Democratic enthusiasm. Republican incumbent Andy Barr fended off a strong challenged from Democrat Amy McGrath, a Naval Academy graduate and the first female U.S. Marine to pilot an F/A-18 Hornet in combat, in Kentucky's 6th Congressional District.

But Republicans appeared bound to hold onto the Senate, and possibly even pick up a couple of seats.

Blackburn, a conservative who is also an ardent Trump backer, defeated former Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen, 74. Republicans later picked up their second Democratic Senate seat of the night when Kevin Cramer beat one Sen.

North Dakota has joined MI in deciding whether to legalize marijuana, something already done in nine states plus the District of Columbia - but no place yet in the Midwest. His approval rating - 39% in the latest CNN poll - is within the range where the President's party typically suffers heavy losses on Capitol Hill. His connection with his most loyal fans remains so intense that some pundits believe he could help the GOP pull off a surprise.

Today's elections are the first opportunity for Americans to have a say about Donald Trump's presidency. Also, more said they showed up at the polls to express opposition than did those who said they were casting a ballot to support him. "Now we just need to heal the country so they can all work together". But what is on the minds of Americans as they head to the ballot box?

In taking back the House, Democrats will now able to block party-line legislation and chair several critical committees with appropriations and subpoena power, making it hard for the president to unilaterally decide what priorities to fund and opening him and his aides to investigation on countless fronts.

"In this cycle, it seemed as if there was a disproportionately negative reaction among highly educated voters to Trump", he said.

The cockpit voice recorder has not been recovered but searchers are focusing on a particular area based on a weak locator signal. The pilot made an emergency " Pan-Pan" call signaling technical problems with the aircraft requesting to return to the airport.

Mr Trump's party is projected to hold on to the upper chamber in Congress, where they now hold a slim 51-49 majority.

Tuesday's elections also tested the strength of a Trump-era political realignment defined by evolving divisions among voters by race, gender, and especially education. "So, something is happening", Trump told reporters on Monday, shrugging off suggestions that Democrats had the momentum.

WASHINGTON (AP) -Republicans have retained Senate control for two more years, shattering Democrats' dreams of an anti-Trump wave sweeping them into majority.

The President planned to have dinner with his family and to watch the results, which could have a profound impact on the rest of his term and could reshape Washington's balance of power, in the residence of the White House.

The party also continues to oppose the president's withdrawal from a 2015 worldwide nuclear deal with Iran, and may use control of the House as a vehicle to undermine or probe his policy of "maximum pressure" on the Islamic republic.

McSally and Sinema are running neck-in-neck in a state which President Donald Trump won by 3.5 percentage points in the 2016 presidential election.

The entire 435-member House of Representatives and a third of the 100-seat Senate are up for grabs.

Democrats could also recapture governor's offices in several battleground states such as Michigan, Wisconsin and OH, a potential help for the party in those states in the 2020 presidential race. A CNN poll released on November 5 found that Democrats led Republicans on a generic ballot by 13 points, 55 percent to 42 percent. Any effort to impeach Trump would run smack into a trial in a friendly Senate.

The incumbent Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill is seen as vulnerable and may lose her seat to her Republican challenger Josh Hawley. In the 2010 midterm elections, which were widely viewed as a referendum on then-President Obama and the Affordable Care Act, Republicans picked up 63 House seats and six Senate seats - numbers the Democrats are not expected to hit tonight.
