Lowe’s closing 31 Canadian stores, 20 stores in U.S.

Lowe's opened its Northern Avenue location in 2015 after renovations were completed on the former Zellers spot.

Based in Boucherville, Que., Lowe's Canadian business has more than 630 corporate and independent affiliate dealer stores. Twenty U.S. stores are also be closing.

The company is already shuttering its Orchard Supply chain of 99 stores, leading to between US$390 million and US$475 million in write-downs. "We believe our people are the foundation of our business and essential to our future growth, and we are making every effort to transition impacted associates to nearby Lowe's stores".

Most of the unprofitable stores are each within 10 miles of another one of its stores, Lowe's said.

USA economy adds more jobs
And a storm-related drop in average wages a year ago, resulting from Hurricane Harvey, helped inflate October's gain. The BLS estimated there was no discernible impact from Hurricane Michael in October, according to Capital Economics.

Lowe's on Thomas Burgin Parkway in Quincy is one of 20 underperforming stores the home improvement chain announced this morning it will close by February 1 across the United States.

The company says it will give associates opportunities to transition to other stores.

Store closing sales will occur at most of the affected locations, with exception of select stores in the US, which the company said will close immediately.

The U.S. retailer acquired Rona Inc.in Canada in 2016 in a deal valued at $3.2 billion.
