NASA Bids Farewell To The Kepler Space Telescope

Hertz said that NASA does not provide any definitive list of how numerous planets discovered by Kepler might be Earth-like, but a scientific paper published several years ago listed 30.

Unfortunately the last five years of Kepler's exploits were hindered by malfunctioning reaction wheels, limiting the number of target stars that the space telescope could be directed towards.

The main mission of Kepler was finding ekzoplanet outside the Solar system.

Kepler's scientific contributions - and Earth-trailing solar orbit - ensure it will always have a place in the sun. NASA realized Kepler was running out of fuel earlier this summer and made a decision to officially retire it.

Kepler launched in 2009 with the largest digital camera outfitter for outer space at the time of launch.

But the main thing - the telescope confirmed that it is theoretically habitable planets orbit roughly every third star that you can see in the night sky.

William Borucki, who like Kepler is now retired but was the mission's founding principal investigator, added: "When we started conceiving this mission 35 years ago we didn't know of a single planet outside our solar system".

Kepler showed us that "we live in a galaxy that's teeming with planets, and we're ready to take the next step to explore those planets", she said.

Kepler also surprised scientists four years into its mission after its primary objectives were met, by lasting much longer.

In its stead, NASA's TESS has begun working on discovering other planets by using the same transiting method Kepler used, but with better and newer technology.

Maulana Samiul Haq - life in focus

"The search for planets is the search for life", said Natalie Batalha, a longtime Kepler mission scientist now at the University of California, Santa Cruz, during a conference in 2017.

Data pile After observing more than half a million stars over the course of the mission, Kepler's data has revealed that the most common exoplanet lies somewhere between the scale of Earth and Neptune.

NASA's Ames Research Center manages the Kepler and K2 missions for NASA's Science Mission Directorate.

"The Kepler mission was based on a very innovative design".

"That's the path Kepler has put us on", said Paul Hertz, astrophysics division director at NASA Headquarters in Washington. At first, scientists didn't discover many exoplanets, but in just a short time, Kepler discovered thousands of exoplanets.

Kepler's data also provided a new way to assess whether a planet had a solid surface, like Earth and Mars, or is gaseous, like Jupiter and Saturn.

Later, these planets - and those found by Kepler - can be studied by the James Webb Space Telescope, which will be able to look closer at the atmospheres and possibly determine their habitability.

"We know the spacecraft's retirement isn't the end of Kepler's discoveries", said Jessie Dotson, Kepler's project scientist at NASA's Ames Research Center in California's Silicon Valley.

Does the fact that Kepler found 2,600 planets around those 150,000 stars mean that we can expect only a small fraction of stars to have planets? "I'm excited about the diverse discoveries that are yet to come from our data and how future missions will build upon Kepler's results".
