Globally, nature, biodiversity and planetary health, are in steep decline

Since 1998 the Living Planet Report, a science-based assessment of the health of our planet, has been tracking the state of global biodiversity. Numerous scientists believe the world is on the verge of witnessing a sixth mass extinction; which will be the first to be triggered by the lethal species- Humans. "Or we can be the generation that had its chance and failed to act; that let Earth slip away".

Canadian wildlife are not exempt from a "global biodiversity crisis" that is devastating worldwide animal populations, according to a stark new report by the World Wildlife Fund.

In 2009, scientists weighed the impact of humanity's expanding appetites on nine processes - known as Earth systems - within nature.

Over-exploitation of nature caused by agriculture and deforestation are the major causes behind 60 per cent of the wildlife and 87 per cent wetlands being wiped out, says the WWF report. We can be the founders of a global movement that changed our relationship with the planet.

What is increasingly clear is that human development and wellbeing are reliant on healthy natural systems, and we can not continue to enjoy the former without the latter.

It is estimated that 99pc of all species that have ever lived on planet Earth are now extinct, driven in large part by evolution, changing climates and, of course, human intervention.

This year's report indicates our role in the loss of 83% of freshwater wildlife since 1970, 20% of the Amazon, and half of the world's shallow-water corals which is a shocking statistic.

A picture shows police and firemen gathering at the site of Monday's suicide attack in the centre of the Tunisian capital Tunis . Eight police officers and a civilian were hurt in the explosion in Avenue Habib Bourguiba at about 1.50pm local time.

"We are the first generation that has a clear picture of the enormous impact we have on nature".

"The future of millions of species on Earth seems not to have captured the imagination or attention of the world's leaders enough to catalyze the change necessary", the report says. "Pakistan is experiencing a steady rise in carbon emissions, which contributes to global issues such as climate change and global warming", he said.

The WWF publishes its Living Planet Report every two years, and the last edition in 2016 described a sharp decline in global animal populations, with the number of vertebrates falling by well over half between 1970 and 2012. "Wildlife around the world continue to dwindle", said Carter Roberts, President and CEO of WWF-US.

"The nature conservation agenda is not only about securing the future of tigers, pandas, whales", WWF's International Director, Marco Lambertini, says in the report's introduction.

Calling the wildlife and the ecosystem "vital to human life", the current chairman of an intergovernmental panel on biodiversity and world's most eminent environmental scientists said, "destruction of nature is as unsafe as climate change". "We may be the last that can take action to reverse this trend". It underscores the rapidly closing window for action and the urgent need for the global community to rethink and redefine how we value, protect and restore nature.

In 2020, many nations of the world will be meeting at the UN's Convention on Biological Diversity to make new commitments to protect nature and wildlife.

More generally, the marginal capacity of Earth's ecosystems to renew themselves has been far outstripped by humanity's ecological footprint, which has almost tripled in 50 years.
